A washed-up comedian travels through the Californian desert performing his bleak, abrasive stand-up act to sparse and indifferent crowds at small venues. Between shows he makes awkward attempts to reconnect with a cousin and leaves unanswered voicemail messages for his estranged daughter. The film follows his increasingly detached and melancholic drift through a landscape that seems to reflect his own emptiness.
