Set in Stalinist Soviet Russia, a disgraced MGB secret police officer named Leo Demidov is stripped of his rank and exiled to a provincial posting after refusing to denounce his wife as a spy. While investigating a series of child murders that the state insists cannot exist — since, officially, murder is a capitalist crime — Leo and his wife work outside official channels to track down a serial killer. Their pursuit brings them into direct conflict with both the murderer and the repressive Soviet apparatus itself.
