The Dancer
Directed by Stéphanie Di Giusto (2016)
Loïe Fuller, an American performer in late nineteenth-century Paris, battles to establish herself as a serious artist despite being dismissed by the theatrical establishment. Through sheer determination she pioneers an extraordinary style of dance using billowing silk and coloured electric light, captivating audiences and winning the admiration of figures such as Rodin. Her ambitions are complicated by her possessive mother, financial pressures, and her intense relationship with the young Isadora Duncan, whose natural talent threatens to overshadow her own.
