Madrasapattinam

(2010)

A young woman from a wealthy British family travels to India in the 1940s to recover a family heirloom and, through the story told by an elderly woman, learns of a passionate romance that unfolded in the bustling port city of Madras during the final years of colonial rule. The tale centres on a poor local fisherman who falls deeply in love with the British girl, their bond growing amidst the vibrant chaos of the city's working-class neighbourhoods. Their relationship is tested by social barriers, political unrest surrounding Indian independence, and the inevitable departure of the British from the subcontinent, leading to a bittersweet conclusion that spans generations.
