The tale centres on a poor local fisherman who falls deeply in love with the British girl, their bond growing amidst the vibrant chaos of the city's working-class neighbourhoods. Their relationship is tested by social barriers, political unrest surrounding Indian independence, and the inevitable departure of the British from the subcontinent, leading to a bittersweet conclusion that spans generations.
