Almayer's Folly
(2011)
A nineteenth-century Dutch trader named Almayer languishes in a remote outpost on the Borneo coast, clinging to dreams of wealth and a better life for his mixed-race daughter Nina. His ambitions unravel as Nina falls in love with a Malay prince and chooses to abandon her father and embrace her maternal heritage. The film, directed by Chantal Akerman and adapted from Joseph Conrad's novel, interweaves past and present to explore themes of colonialism, longing, and the corrosive nature of obsession.
