A young fisherman's son from a humble Egyptian village earns a scholarship to study at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, the heart of Sunni Islamic scholarship. When the Grand Imam dies unexpectedly, he becomes an unlikely pawn caught between Egyptian intelligence and powerful religious factions, each manoeuvring to control who will be appointed as the next supreme religious authority. As the political and spiritual intrigue deepens around him, he must navigate loyalties and dangers far beyond anything his modest upbringing prepared him for.
