A decorated military officer returns from war to find that his supposed death has made him a figure of romantic legend, particularly through the passionate letters his sister-in-law has been fabricating on his behalf. As the truth threatens to unravel the fiction she has carefully constructed, the two adversaries find themselves caught in an increasingly complicated battle of wits. The film blends period comedy with a slow-burning romantic tension set in early nineteenth-century France.
