Le Cinque Giornate di Milano
Directed by Carlo Lizzani
A roguish petty criminal and an unlikely band of companions find themselves caught up in the 1848 popular uprising against Austrian rule in Milan. What begins as self-interested opportunism gradually pulls the protagonist into the heart of the five days of street fighting that would become a landmark moment in Italian history. The film blends comic irreverence with historical drama, viewing the Risorgimento through the eyes of ordinary, unheroic people rather than celebrated patriots.
